2018 FIFA World Cup Russia: France, Croatia, Belgium

2018 FIFA World Cup Russia: France, Croatia, Belgium

FIFA World Cup in Russia has just ended and we know the winner and that is France. Croatia, Belgium, and England were also very close. Let’s take a look at some World Cup-related stamps from medalists.

Expectations

I have big expectations, especially from France and Croatia, regarding special issues. Until now I haven’t found any such stamps, so I’ll go with ones available at this moment.

France – 1998

France is the winner of 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia and managed to repeat its’ best result ever from 20 years ago. I guess some of us still remember that France won it’s the first title ever on 1998 FIFA World Cup held in France.

France squad in 1998 was:
Bernard Lama, Vincent Candela, Bixente Lizarazu, Patrick Vieira, Laurent Blanc, Youri Djorkaeff, Didier Deschamps (Captain), Marcel Desailly, Stéphane Guivarc’h, Zinedine Zidane, Robert Pirès, Thierry Henry, Bernard Diomède, Alain Boghossian, Lilian Thuram, Fabien Barthez, Emmanuel Petit, Frank Lebœuf, Christian Karembeu, David Trezeguet, Christophe Dugarry, Lionel Charbonnier.

That is also the reason for including the 1998 stamp from France in this article. It’s not only very related to this topic but also of an interesting shape and design.

France – 2018

The World Cup title in Russia is the 2nd one for France and the squad that made it is:

Hugo Lloris (captain), Benjamin Pavard, Presnel Kimpembe, Raphaël Varane, Samuel Umtiti, Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann, Thomas Lemar, Olivier Giroud, Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Corentin Tolisso, N’Golo Kanté, Blaise Matuidi, Steven Nzonzi, Steve Mandanda, Adil Rami, Nabil Fekir, Djibril Sidibé, Florian Thauvin, Lucas Hernández, Benjamin Mendy, Alphonse Areola.

La Poste has a service to print your own spams based on few predefined designs. That was also the case with special designs prepared for and during the 2018 World Cup. First two stamps represent the first and the second color of national team.

The next 4 designs are related to the France road to the tile with one design for each match in the elimination round:

  • Round of 16 – France: Argentina = 4:3
  • Quarter-finals – Uruguay: France = 0:2
  • Semi-finals – France: Belgium = 1:0
  • Final – France: Croatia = 4:2

The last two designs are devoted to participants of the big finale: France and Croatia.

Croatia

For Croatia, this was also very important and emotive tournament. The best result Croatia had until now, was 3rd place, also from World Cup 1998. This was almost like a legend, until now.

Croatia won all matches in 2018 World Cup, except the finals, of course. I guess nobody expected such a result (although the Croatian team has some top-class players) and the quad that made this miracle to happen is:

Dominik Livaković, Šime Vrsaljko, Ivan Strinić, Ivan Perišić, Vedran Ćorluka, Dejan Lovren, Ivan Rakitić, Mateo Kovačić, Andrej Kramarić, Luka Modrić (captain), Marcelo Brozović, Lovre Kalinić, Tin Jedvaj, Filip Bradarić, Duje Ćaleta-Car, Nikola Kalinić, Mario Mandžukić, Ante Rebić, Milan Badelj, Marko Pjaca, Domagoj Vida, Josip Pivarić, Danijel Subašić.

Belgium

This was also the most important World Cup for Belgium also. With all victories, except vs. France in semi-finals, Belgium made it to the 3rd place which is their best result ever.

Denomination: 1 Europe

Belgian squad that achieved this is:

Thibaut Courtois, Toby Alderweireld, Thomas Vermaelen, Vincent Kompany, Jan Vertonghen, Axel Witsel, Kevin De Bruyne, Marouane Fellaini, Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard (captain), Yannick Carrasco, Simon Mignolet, Koen Casteels, Dries Mertens, Thomas Meunier, Thorgan Hazard, Youri Tielemans, Adnan Januzaj, Mousa Dembélé, Dedryck Boyata, Michy Batshuayi, Nacer Chadli, Leander Dendoncker

The only reason for not mentioning England in this article is because of the fact I haven’t found any 2018 World Cup-related stamps from the UK.
