Television on Stamps: Game of Thrones

Television on Stamps: Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is extremely popular and nobody could deny it. Some of those who were not fans of fantasy genre so far became ones due to this (book) series. There are some leaks, but we can’t be sure how this saga will end. But we’re sure there will be some new stamps issued very soon. Today we’ll talk about them.

The winter came (again). But this winter has come without the new GoT season. It’s like Christmas without the snow, like Laurel without Hardy, like football without Messi, like pizza without cheese.

We already wrote about stamps related to Game of Thrones a few months ago. Please check the story and these stamps in this article. Ok, you did it. Now we can continue 😊

Spoiler Alert!!!!!

Is there a better way to start an article than with a good-old spoiler alert and asking you not to read it? So, let me do that 😊

I definitely want to tell you that continuing reading this section could be a major spoiler for the whole upcoming season. So, please stop doing it so if you don’t want to ruin the season, or scroll down to the next section.

Those of us who eagerly waited for each new episode will keep suffering for one more year waiting for the grand finale. Writing usually reminds me to take a look back and remind myself where I was in life when something related happened. This time that is the moment when the first season was aired. A lot had changed since that time and I guess that also happened to you, my readers. The events of the first episode seem very foggy now. But the real question is where we stopped in the last season.

The Night King turned Viserion into the wight and the wall was breached. Army of the dead is marching south, while the living are gathering what they can to fight them. Cersei is calculating, as always and it’s a real question what will happen.

Once again -> major spoiler upcoming. I spent some time researching the Internet in order to find some info on what to expect in the last season. The best info I could find was the one coming (at least accordingly to the author) from the leaked materials and calming that for the season before they had more than 95% correct information.

And once more -> stop reading now if you want to wait! If we choose to believe that source, the army of living will be smashed and almost completely destroyed. At the brink of the final defeat, they’ll kill Brandon Stark, who is actually the Night King and the army of the dead will disintegrate. I really hope that is not how the GoT will end. After all these plots, conspiracies, switching sides, switching our emotions towards certain characters – turning them from evil to good or neutral, etc. etc. I expect something more poetic and complex. At least a good fight without a winning side or some kind of a new deal between dead and living. But, still, that’s only me.

And now, the stamps

The Royal Mail decided to use the popularity of the series and to issue collectible stamps and sheets. They will be issued on January 23, 2018.

And this is how the Royal Mail explained the motivation to issue these stamps:

“The Game of Thrones production involves a very significant British contribution. Principal filming of the series is at Titanic Studios in Belfast, at the Linen Hill Film Studio in Banbridge and on location elsewhere in Northern Ireland, with additional filming in Scotland and European locations including Malta, Croatia, Iceland, Morocco and Spain.

Additionally, the acclaimed cast is predominantly British and Irish, and British expertise is to the fore in many areas of the production, including award-winning costume design and prosthetic special effects.”

Today we’ll take a look at two sheets because it would simply be too much to put all other collectible items in this article.

Human Characters

1st row: Sansa Stark, Jon Snow, Eddard Stark, Oleanna Tyrell, Tywin Lannister

2nd row: Tyrion Lannister, Cersei Lannister, Arya Stark, Jaime Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen

Once more, I’ll use the quote from Royal Mail to describe these stamps:

“The stamps depict photographic representations of central characters from across all seven seasons in the Game of Thrones’ series. Each stamp is centred on an individual character and features a montage of images from the series. The result is a set of ten bespoke images that embody the crux of each character’s story.

Characters featured on the stamps are: Sansa Stark; Jon Snow; Eddard Stark; Olenna Tyrell; Tywin Lannister; Tyrion Lannister; Cersei Lannister; Arya Stark; Jamie Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen.”

As The Punk Philatelist stated in this article, who knows what criteria was used when selecting these 10 characters and instead of others!? It would be really great if they issued at least 5 more stamps because there are at least 5 more characters I would like to see there. Who knows, maybe they’ll do it later. We’ll see.

Non-human characters

The Night King and White Walkers, Giants, Direwolves, Dragons and the Throne in the middle

The second sheet is devoted to non-human characters that appeared in the series so far. The main villain is the Night King, who leads the army of the dead with a little help of his brothers in arms, White Walkers.

The rest of the creatures could be seen as positive ones. They’ll help human characters in defeating the army of the dead (once more I hope it will be something better than the disintegration).

And, of course, the throne is the middle. Everything started because of the fight for the throne and the result should be seeing someone placing his ass in that chair finally.

There are also some additional collectible philatelic items that will be issued by Royal Mail so be sure to check them. You can see some of them here.

Now we can only wait for one year until new episodes are released. Let’s hope we’ll see some more stamps before that.
