Television on Stamps: Game of Thrones

Television on Stamps: Game of Thrones

Westeros, Essos and Sothoryos. King’s Landing, Braavos, Volantis, Vaes Dothrak, Meereen, Qarth, Winterfell, Harrenhal, Castle Black, Riverrun, Red Keep, Highgarden, The Eyrie and The Twins. First Men, Andals, Northmen, Ironborn, Dornishmen, Dothraki, Children of the Forest, Free Folk and While Walkers. Or maybe – Stark, Lannister, Targaryen, Greyjoy, Bolton, Tyrell, Arryn, Frey, Tully, Baratheon. I guess all of us have at least heard some of these names. Yup, the winter is coming once again. But is it on stamps?

Game of Thrones is one of the most expensive television projects in history with a single episode cost measuring in millions of dollars. It’s based on a series of novels, “A Song of Ice and Fire”, written by George R. R. Martin. All novels in this series are:

  • “A Game of Thrones”
  • “A Clash of Kings”
  • “A Storm of Swords”
  • “A Feast for Crows”
  • “A Dance with Dragons”
  • The Winds of Winter” and
  • “A Dream of Spring”.

Needless to say, books have been translated into dozens of languages and have been sold in tens of millions copies all over the World. Even I have some of them in my home 😊

In order to create a more ‘realistic’ fantasy world, the series was filmed in many locations around the World. Belfast in Northern Ireland served as headquarters for most of the interior scenes as well for some on-location shooting. The other notable countries where the shooting took place are:

  • Croatia,
  • Scotland,
  • Iceland,
  • Spain,
  • Malta and
  • Morocco.

Maybe one of the most notable locations is the city of Dubrovnik in Croatia, which was used for many outdoor scenes set in King’s Landing. When you see the photo of Dubrovnik, you’ll understand why.

But what about stamps?

As mentioned earlier, Northern Ireland served as a headquarters for shooting so it’s no wonder that the Tourism Ireland in collaboration with the Royal Mail issued Game of Thrones related stamp series. Each stamp is tied to one episode of the 6th season. It’s important to mention that these stamps were issued in very limited editions and their sale was mostly limited to Northern Ireland so they seem as a good candidate to become rare and valuable in not so far future. And yes, if you’re a stamp collector and you love Game of Thrones… Do I need to say anything more?

Let’s take a look at these 10 beauties (seasonXXepisodeXX – “episode name” – stamp motif):
